Equipment

  • Steamer

Ingredients

Main

  • 8 all-beef hot dogs
  • 8 poppy seed hot dog buns
  • 1/4 cup yellow mustard
  • 1/4 cup neon green sweet pickle relish
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped white onion
  • 2 medium tomatoes cut into 16 wedges
  • 8 dill pickle spears
  • 16-24 sport peppers 2-3 per hot dog
  • 1 teaspoon celery salt

Instructions

Preparation

  • Steam or simmer the hot dogs in water until they are thoroughly heated and plump, avoiding grilling or pan-frying for an authentic preparation.
  • Gently steam the poppy seed buns until they become soft and warm.
  • Place one hot dog securely into a steamed poppy seed bun as the base of your assembly.

Assembly

  • Squeeze a zigzag pattern of classic yellow mustard directly onto the hot dog.
  • Follow with a generous dollop of the bright neon green sweet pickle relish.
  • Sprinkle about one tablespoon of chopped white onions over the relish, then carefully tuck two tomato wedges down one side of the hot dog, between the hot dog and the bun.
  • Place one dill pickle spear along the other interior side of the hot dog.
  • Add two or three sport peppers carefully on top of the hot dog and its other toppings.
  • Finally, sprinkle approximately 1/8 teaspoon of celery salt over the entire hot dog, then serve immediately and enjoy the deliciously messy experience.

Notes

For the most authentic experience, use Vienna Beef hot dogs with natural casings. The key to a true Chicago-style hot dog is the combination of specific toppings and the preparation method (steaming, not grilling).
