Ingredients
  

For the Donuts

  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 cup milk whole, 2%, or non-dairy
  • ¼ cup melted butter or vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 medium apple about 1 cup finely diced, Granny Smith or Honeycrisp recommended

For the Glaze

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2-3 tablespoons milk
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Peel, core, and finely dice one medium apple. You can lightly sauté the diced apples for 3-5 minutes until tender, or use them raw.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  • In a separate medium bowl, whisk together the egg, milk, melted butter or oil, and vanilla extract.
  • Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined, then gently fold in the diced apples.
  • Preheat your waffle iron to medium-high heat and lightly grease it if necessary.

Cooking

  • Spoon about ¼ to ½ cup of batter onto the hot waffle iron and cook for 3-5 minutes until golden brown and cooked through.
  • While waffles cook, whisk together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract in a small bowl to make the glaze.
  • While warm, dip or drizzle the waffle donuts generously with the vanilla glaze and serve immediately.

Notes

For best results, serve these waffle donuts warm with fresh glaze. You can also experiment with different spices like a pinch of cardamom for an extra flavor boost.
