Main Ingredients

  • 1 can chickpeas (garbanzo beans) drained and rinsed thoroughly

Instructions

  • Drain and thoroughly rinse the canned chickpeas under cold running water to remove excess sodium and starch.
  • Transfer the rinsed chickpeas to a high-speed blender or food processor, then add ½ cup of unsweetened plant-based milk or vegetable broth.
  • Blend until completely smooth and creamy, which typically takes 1-3 minutes; if the sauce is too thick, add more liquid one tablespoon at a time until the desired consistency is reached.
  • Taste the sauce and add any desired seasonings such as salt, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, nutritional yeast, or herbs, then blend briefly to incorporate.
  • If serving warm, gently heat the sauce in a saucepan over medium-low heat, stirring frequently, until warmed through, being careful not to boil it.

Notes

This sauce is incredibly versatile! Enjoy it as a pasta sauce, a dip for vegetables, or a creamy spread for sandwiches. For a thicker sauce, use less liquid; for a thinner sauce, add more. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days.
