  • 1 medium yellow onion finely diced
  • 1 green bell pepper finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce
  • ½ cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt or to taste
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper or to taste
  • red pepper flakes Optional: Pinch for heat

Cooking Steps

  • Brown the ground beef in a large skillet over medium-high heat until cooked through, then drain excess fat.
  • Add diced onion and green bell pepper to the skillet and cook until softened, then stir in minced garlic until fragrant.
  • Reduce heat to medium, then add tomato sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, yellow mustard, Worcestershire sauce, apple cider vinegar, chili powder, salt, and black pepper; stir to combine.
  • Bring to a simmer, then reduce heat to low, cover, and cook for 10-15 minutes for flavors to meld and sauce to thicken.
  • Taste and adjust seasonings as needed to suit your preference.
  • Serve the sloppy joe mixture as desired.

Notes

For an extra kick, add a pinch of red pepper flakes with the other seasonings. Serve on toasted buns with a side of coleslaw or pickles.
