  • 1/2 cup vegetable shortening

Instructions

  • In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened unsalted butter and vegetable shortening on medium speed until light and fluffy (3-5 minutes), scraping down the sides as needed.
  • With the mixer on low speed, gradually add the sifted powdered sugar, one cup at a time, mixing until just combined. Increase speed to medium-high and beat until fully incorporated and smooth.
  • Pour in the vanilla extract, heavy cream (starting with 3 tablespoons), and a pinch of salt. Beat on medium-high speed for 2-3 minutes until the frosting is light, airy, and fluffy.
  • Adjust consistency as needed: add more heavy cream for a thinner frosting or more sifted powdered sugar for a thicker one.
  • Give the frosting one last good whip on high speed for about 30 seconds to incorporate extra air and ensure maximum fluffiness.

Notes

Ensure your butter is truly at room temperature for the best creamy texture. Sifting the powdered sugar is crucial for a smooth, lump-free frosting. This recipe yields enough frosting to generously frost 12 cupcakes or a 9x13 inch cake.
