Equipment

  • Large mixing bowl
  • Non-stick skillet
  • Baking sheet

Ingredients

Salmon Patties

  • 1.5 lbs fresh salmon fillets, skin removed, or wild-caught salmon, drained and flaked
  • 1/2 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg, lightly beaten
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped red onion
  • 1 tablespoon fresh dill, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon lemon zest
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil (for pan-frying)

For Serving

  • Burger buns
  • lettuce
  • tomato
  • red onion
  • tartar sauce or Greek yogurt dill sauce a dollop

Instructions

Preparation

  • Prepare the salmon by baking, poaching, or finely chopping fresh fillets, or drain and flake canned salmon.
  • In a large bowl, combine the prepared salmon with breadcrumbs, egg, red onion, dill, lemon juice, lemon zest, salt, and pepper, mixing gently until just combined.
  • Divide the mixture into 4-6 portions and form into 1-inch thick patties, adjusting consistency with more breadcrumbs or a splash of water if needed.

Cooking

  • For best results, chill the patties for 20-30 minutes to help them firm up and hold their shape.
  • To pan-fry, heat olive oil in a non-stick skillet over medium heat and cook patties for 4-5 minutes per side until golden brown and cooked through.
  • Alternatively, to bake, preheat oven to 400°F (200°C), place patties on a lightly greased baking sheet, and bake for 15-20 minutes, flipping halfway, until golden and cooked through.

Serving

  • Serve the cooked salmon burgers immediately on buns with your favorite toppings and sauces.

Notes

For an extra flavor boost, try adding a pinch of smoked paprika to the salmon mixture. Ensure the salmon is well-drained if using canned to prevent soggy patties. Garnish with fresh dill sprigs for an appealing presentation.
