Equipment

  • parchment paper
  • small bowl
  • hand mixer
  • small sharp knife
  • whisk

Ingredients

Puff Pastry

  • 1 package sheet puff pastry from a 17.3-ounce package, thawed

Cream Cheese Filling

  • 4 ounces cream cheese softened
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract

Strawberry Topping

  • 1 cup fresh strawberries hulled and thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice optional

For Glaze (Optional)

  • ½ cup powdered sugar
  • 1-2 tablespoons milk or cream

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • In a small bowl, beat together softened cream cheese, 2 tablespoons granulated sugar, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  • In another small bowl, gently toss sliced strawberries with 1 tablespoon granulated sugar and optional lemon juice.

Assembling the Danishes

  • Unroll the thawed puff pastry onto a lightly floured surface and cut it into 4 equal squares.
  • Create a heart shape by making two diagonal cuts from the center of the top edge towards the bottom corners of each square, then fold the top corners back to meet below the top point of the "V" and gently press the edges. Transfer the heart shapes to the baking sheet.
  • Spoon 1-2 tablespoons of cream cheese mixture into the center of each pastry heart, spreading it gently within the "V" area.
  • Arrange the sweetened strawberry slices over the cream cheese filling.

Baking and Glazing

  • Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and puffed, and the filling is set.
  • While the danishes cool slightly, whisk together powdered sugar and milk/cream until smooth. Drizzle the glaze over the warm danishes before serving.

Notes

For crisper danishes, ensure your puff pastry is very cold before shaping. You can also experiment with other fruit toppings like blueberries or raspberries.
