Equipment

  • Oven
  • Small oven-safe baking dish (8x4 or 6x6 inch)
  • Medium bowl
  • Whisk
  • Plastic wrap

Ingredients

Bread

  • 4 slices challah, brioche, or sturdy white bread (stale is best!) about 1-inch thick

Custard

  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup whole milk or half-and-half
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar (for topping) packed
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 pinch nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon melted butter

Optional Toppings

  • Maple syrup
  • fresh berries
  • powdered sugar

Instructions

Preparation

  • Tear or cut bread into 1-inch cubes; if not stale, lightly toast to dry.
  • Lightly butter a small oven-safe baking dish and arrange bread cubes evenly.
  • Whisk together eggs, milk, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a medium bowl.

Soaking & Baking

  • Pour custard over bread cubes, ensuring all bread is saturated; gently press down.
  • Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.
  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C), dot casserole with butter, and sprinkle with brown sugar.
  • Bake for 25-35 minutes until golden brown, puffed, and a knife inserted comes out clean.
  • Let cool for a few minutes before serving with optional toppings.

Notes

For best results, use stale bread to ensure maximum custard absorption and a non-soggy casserole. Adjust baking time based on your oven and dish size to achieve a perfectly golden and set French toast casserole.
