Equipment

  • Large skillet or Dutch oven

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 lb sirloin steak, thinly sliced or cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 1 medium yellow onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup uncooked white rice (such as long-grain or jasmine)
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 0.5 teaspoon dried thyme
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1 cup shredded Monterey Jack or Colby Jack cheese
  • Fresh parsley, chopped for garnish, optional

Instructions

Cooking

  • Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat and sear the steak until browned, then remove.
  • Sauté diced onion in the same skillet until softened, then add minced garlic and cook until fragrant.
  • Stir in uncooked rice, then pour in beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, dried thyme, salt, and pepper; bring to a boil.
  • Reduce heat, cover, and simmer for 15-20 minutes until rice is tender and liquid is absorbed.
  • Return steak to the skillet, stir to combine, then top with shredded cheese and cover until melted and bubbly.
  • Garnish with fresh parsley, if desired, and serve hot.

Notes

For extra flavor, consider marinating the steak for at least 30 minutes before searing. Adjust the amount of Worcestershire sauce based on your preference; a little goes a long way to add depth. If you prefer a spicier dish, a pinch of red pepper flakes can be added with the thyme.
