Equipment

  • electric mixer
  • large bowl

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar sifted
  • 1/4 cup milk or heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • salt pinch (optional)

Instructions

Preparation

  • Ensure your butter is softened not melted, and sift the powdered sugar for a smooth frosting.

Mixing

  • Beat the softened butter with an electric mixer for 3-5 minutes until it's light in color and airy.
  • Gradually add the sifted powdered sugar, about 1 cup at a time, mixing on low speed until combined and scraping the bowl as needed.
  • Add the milk/cream, vanilla extract, and salt, mixing on low until just combined.

Whipping

  • Increase mixer speed to medium-high and beat for 3-5 minutes to make the frosting light and fluffy; add more liquid if too thick.

Notes

For best results, make sure all ingredients are at room temperature. This frosting is great for piping onto cupcakes or spreading evenly on cakes. If you prefer a stiffer frosting, use less milk; for a thinner frosting, add a little more.
