Ingredients
  

Dry Ingredients

  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt

Wet Ingredients

  • ½ cup unsalted butter (1 stick), softened
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup light brown sugar , packed
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips (mini chips or chopped chocolate recommended)

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt, then set aside for later use.
  • Cream softened butter, granulated sugar, and light brown sugar in a large bowl with an electric mixer until light and fluffy.
  • Beat in the egg and vanilla extract, ensuring well combined and scraping the bowl sides as needed.
  • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing on low speed until just combined without overmixing.
  • By hand, fold in the chocolate chips until they are evenly distributed throughout the dough.
  • Cover the dough in the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, or up to 24 hours, to ensure neat heart shapes.

Baking

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper while the cookie dough chills.
  • Roll the chilled dough to about 1/4 inch thickness on a lightly floured surface or between parchment paper sheets, then use a heart-shaped cookie cutter to cut out shapes.
  • Carefully place the heart-shaped dough onto the prepared baking sheets, leaving about 2 inches of space between each cookie.
  • Bake the cookies for 8-11 minutes, or until their edges are golden brown and the centers remain slightly soft.
  • Immediately after baking, gently press a heart-shaped cookie cutter around each warm, pliable cookie to sharpen and perfect its heart shape.
  • Cool cookies on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

For perfectly defined heart shapes, be sure to chill your dough for at least an hour. The second use of the cookie cutter right out of the oven is key to crisp edges!
