Equipment

  • Oven
  • Baking sheets
  • Parchment paper or silicone mats
  • Medium bowl
  • Whisk
  • Large bowl
  • Electric mixer
  • Shallow dish
  • Wire rack

Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • 1 ½ cups All-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup Unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ½ teaspoon Baking soda
  • ¼ teaspoon Salt

Wet Ingredients

  • ½ cup Unsalted butter, softened (1 stick)
  • ¾ cup Granulated sugar (plus ¼ cup for rolling)
  • 1 Large egg
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract
  • 1-2 teaspoons Good quality red gel food coloring

Topping

  • 10 Hershey's Kisses, unwrapped

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and line two baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone mats. Unwrap the Hershey's Kisses and set aside.

Mix Dry Ingredients

  • In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt; then set aside.

Mix Wet Ingredients

  • In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and ¾ cup granulated sugar with an electric mixer until light and fluffy. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract, then add the red food coloring and mix until the dough is uniformly red.

Combine and Chill

  • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing on low speed until just combined without overmixing. Cover the dough and chill in the refrigerator for 15-20 minutes for easier handling.

Form and Bake Cookies

  • Place ¼ cup of granulated sugar in a shallow dish, then roll the chilled dough into 1-inch balls and coat each ball thoroughly in the sugar. Arrange the sugared dough balls two inches apart on the prepared baking sheets and bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges are just set and the centers are slightly soft.

Add Hershey's Kisses

  • Immediately press a Hershey's Kiss into the center of each warm cookie upon removing them from the oven.

Cool

  • Let the cookies cool on the baking sheets for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

For extra festive touch, dust cooled cookies with a light sprinkling of powdered sugar before serving. Make sure your butter is truly softened for the best texture in your cookie dough. Chilling the dough is crucial for easier handling and to prevent the cookies from spreading too much.
