Ingredients

Frosting Ingredients

  • 2 lbs powdered sugar, sifted
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/4 cup milk (whole or 2% recommended)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract (optional)
  • Pinch salt
  • AmeriColor gel food coloring as needed for desired colors

Instructions

Preparation

  • Sift the powdered sugar into a large mixing bowl to remove any lumps.
  • In a separate bowl, cream the softened butter with an electric mixer until light and fluffy.
  • Gradually add the sifted powdered sugar to the creamed butter, mixing on low speed until combined.
  • Pour in the milk, vanilla extract, almond extract (if using), and salt, then beat on medium-high speed for 3-5 minutes until the frosting is smooth and fluffy.
  • Adjust the consistency by adding milk for a thinner frosting or powdered sugar for a thicker one.
  • Divide the frosting into bowls for coloring, adding gel food coloring sparingly and mixing thoroughly.
  • For shine, vigorously stir each colored bowl of frosting for about 30 seconds to remove air bubbles.

Notes

For deeper colors, let the colored frosting sit for 15-20 minutes before using.
